Hello all and let me say its great to meet you. I have a Fantom G8 (OS 1.3) and I love it. I recently picked up some modules on e-bay (JV-1080 and an XV-3080). I can get the G8 to control both modules, that is to say play patches, but I cannot get it send bank and/or patch changes to either. It seems to default to General MIDI when I do. Am I doing something wrong here? I have both set up on the correct channel to receive. I have even isolated each module and still the same thing. This occurres in Live and Studio mode and also happens with my Yamaha Motif R. Any suggestions would be appreciated and thanks to everyone in advance.
Welcome..
A nice collection of goodies there.
I'm trying to help out a G7 user with patch selection issues too.
I don't have access to a Fantom G sadly, so I may not have all the answers you seek.
Is the Yamaha Motif R a rack mounted module too?
The fact that all seem to be going into a GM mode suggests that somehow the Fantom is sending a message to make them do it.
I've looked in the system details it receives a GM / GS reset message, but it doesn't appear to send one.
My other thought was control channel on the JV-1080 and XV-3080. However these only control switching of performances.
I shall have to sleep on it (it's 3:15 am) and my brain is mushy. I've been attempting to answer others too. I thought I should send a quick reply so as to show you've not been ignored.
Thanks Paul. The Motif is a rack module also. I thought initially that chaining them together on different channels might be mucking the signal somehow, so I plugged each one in as a standalone. Same thing. Not sure what to do here. Hopefully someone from Roland has come across this issue too? Anyway, thanks for the quick reply. This has to be a workable fix.
I did stumble across a system setting that is worth trying.
Within the MIDI section..
Transmit bank select.
Try turning it off, I know you want to use Bank select, but I'm trying to find the rote cause of the problem. If it's still switch the modules to GM mode, then clearly the problem is somewhere else.
What modes are the Roland modules in, patch mode, or performance modes?
I don't know much about the Motif, so has this a similar single patch, and multi-tambral configuration?
Are you using the sequencer, or trying to play them in real time from the G8?
In your original post you did mention this happens in both live, and studio modes. From what I can work out from the manual studio mode is the multi-tambral mode. Live would be patches / layers.
I know questions, questions. Just trying to get as much info as possible to try and suss it out.
My humble D-50 is my MIDI controller, so I've no issues with bank select as it doesn't have it.
I can control the bank selection of my 2080 (bigger brother to the 1080) via the sequencer program.
My 990 should do to, but it seems to be playing up. I have to use CC's manually within the tracks to set them.
That's the problem with getting state of the art stuff, the plumbing gets complicated.
Cheers,
Paul
I control loads of midi gear from my G7, JV1080, MKS70, Mopho, ES Rack
Here's how to do it.
Go to SYSTEM & select MIDI.
Ensure Transmit Program Change & Transmit Bank Select are set to yes. Then do a SYSTEM WRITE.
Choose a midi channel for your device - say for your JV1080 choose channel 11 - you'll need to set your JV1080 to channel 11.
Check out the manual for your JV1080 page 79 (you can download manuals from Roland) - it gives you all the gen for selecting bank and patches. e.g. MSB 80, LSB 0, Patch 1 is patch 1 in User in patch mode. (Don't worry about what MSB & LSB stand for - they are chunks of data that correspond to a bank select)
Go to a live setting on the G7 and go to the line for midi channel 11. In Type enter the 80, in Bank enter the 0 and in Patch enter the 1.
You will find that just changing the patch value will send a midi message to the JV1080.
You can daisy change loads of midi stuff without any problem - I use my G7 to control 4 other pieces of MIDI gear. Just connect them in sequence using MIDI in and then take the output to the next device with MIDI thru.
I never thought of doing a system write after I made changes. Apparently I need to pour through some of the technical details (banks etc) on some of the MIDI modules to make sure I have the correct banks selected for the particular module. I'll give it a try and double-thanks again.
