Hi all, I am a newcomer to this forum and would like to know what you think about the change from Vista to Win 7, I am using Cubase Studio 4, Acid pro 7, and FL Studio 9, on Vista at the moment, I have got the Win 7 upgrade but I am a bit worried that it will give me a load of problems, I suppose the old saying "if it ant broke don't fix it" comes to mind. What do you think.

Thanks ...Pete

I tend to follow that "don't broke don't fix it route" too.
If it's all running sweet. Then why change it.

I have been running Logic Audio on a PC, but as you know that was dropped like a hot stone by Apple when they bought it.
I also run SoundDiver.
I've tried running SD on a my old laptop, no joy. All down to the fact there is no actual serial interface on it. I tried USB to serial, nope, I tried USB to MIDI, nope.
Windows 98, 2000, and XP. No joy.
I have recently tried to run it on a desktop, it wouldn't run on XP. However I've got it going under 2000.
I've also just switched to Sonar. This only runs on XP and above.

So my work around..
Dual boot to machine. I've XP for Sonar, or I can boot under 2000 for SD / Logic.
I would try this approach first. See if any of your current software runs under Win 7.

I've Win 7 on this lappy I currently run. It's my gereral purpose computer, T'nternet, Iplayer, fracebook, and here. The desktop is to run the music software only. So that's another idea you might consider.

Thanks for that I was going to just have my desktop run my music progs and laptop for everything else, I think I will keep Vista on desktop as all is working fine and put Win7 on laptop to keep up with the times, Thanks for your input.

Changing the subject I have an SC-88 for sale if anyone is interested good condition works like new, just surplus to requirements

I've recently switched to Windows 7, having previously used both Vista and XP. I originally set up my desktop PC to dual-boot both 7 and XP so that I had the option of sticking with XP if 7 didn't work out. However, I've found it 7 to be so good that I've removed it from all of my computers. It's definitely a lot better than Vista; I've had next to no issues with 7, whereas Vista often caused problems, not all of which were solvable to my satisfaction.

Before making that change yourself, though, you need to check whether or not 7 is compatible with all of the audio (and non-audio) software that you want to use. Some of the packages you've mentioned are not the latest versions so I doubt that they will be fully compatible; even if they do work okay they won't be officially supported so you'll be doing so at your own risk. Cubase 5, for example, is now supported by Steinberg but you need to install an update to achieve this. Cubase 4, however, is not supported; nor is it ever likely to be.

If you are going to update to 7, I would recommend installing it as part of a dual-booting system that retains Vista. Then at least you have a fall-back position if things don't work out.

Change to Windows 7! I have a lot of gear that doesn't have updated drivers for Windows 7 and the compatibility functions in 7 work well. 7 gets rid of all the issues you might have had with Vista and performs better.

The trouble with such unqualified advice, Joe, is that it assumes someone else's circumstances are exactly the same as yours. And you can't possibly know that.

On the whole, yes, W7 is a much better operating system than Vista. That doesn't mean that the original poster's hardware and software will work flawlessly with it. They might have gear that you don't have in your set-up and that might experience real issues in a W7 system.

Dual-booting the operating system that you know to work well with the one you're interested in using is a much safer route. It provides a 'plan B' in case the experiment doesn't work out or at least until you can afford to update the gear that's not compatible.

Thanks for your "qualified" assumption! I have been running Windows 7 since it was distributed to me as a TechNet tester and I've had no issues so far.

However I agree dual booting is a good idea when installing any new OS, I wanted to make sure Clementssound was not put off moving to Windows 7 from Vista, given that Vista is arguably one of Microsoft's worst and most incompatible OS creations.

'Unqualified advice' is not a reference to your level of experience or knowledge.

It means that your answer was not modified by conditions or reservations; it was absolute.
