Hello, I have a Roland SPD-S that wasn't used much by its previous owner, but having turned it on and hooked up an output as per the manual, none of the pads respond to being hit, i.e. none of the red lights light up when I hit the pads and it makes no sound. It is in patch mode and I have tried changing the sensitivity, to no effect. Is there anything else I should try before I give up and send it to be repaired?

It's possible that something has become dislodged when shipped, assuming this is a ebay purchase.
At least you got a manual. Did you get a flash card, and the original CD too?
Have you asked the previous owner what it might be?
I'm thinking it could be something simple..
Is the local control turned on? It's part of the 'setup'(P 74 of manual) and comes under the MIDI menu.
If you have access to another MIDI instrument, see if it can trigged remotely.
You could also see if the pads are sending anything by having it send out to another MIDI instrument.
Check local control first, and get back to me.
If local control is on, then I'll try and think what else it might be..
It sounds like you don't have the flash card inserted properly. You would get nothing from it with no flash card. Let us know if this is not the issue.
I've got the same problem, I've been using mine on stage for about three years. Out of nowhere all of the pads stopped responding. I've tried resetting local control, INIT and reloading the original banks. Doesn't work with the CF card or just as factory. Also will not trigger external MIDI. This thing is my brain on stage and I'm considering the Korg Wave Drum to replace it if I can't get this sorted out (Or maybe both, they are phenomenal instruments heehee). Any help from Roland? I'm assuming my warranty is long over. Troubleshooting tips???
