One step forward, two steps back..

Sorry to hear that Trevor.

I would guess com 1 would be the modem on the motherboard. com 2 & 3.. no idea.
The driver software is stuck on port 1, and can't be changed? [censored]..

I have a nasty feeling you will end up with a USB MIDI interface at the end of the day..

http://www.studiospares.com/MIDI-Interfaces/Midiman-Midisport-2X2/invt/360910
(The only ones with 2 outs and are in stock. There are others but you'll need a bigger wallet.)

There's that well know auction site starting with 'e'

My MIDI interface uses the serial port, and you can select the com port it works on.
I'm not aware of any 'new' serial port interfaces, but you might find a used one, just make sure it has compatible drivers. I would be very surprised if Windows 7 or Vista will appear for mine.
That has reminded me, on my current PC there was a serial interface, but it needed a PCI bay slot, and a lead plugged into the motherboard.
Would be interesting to find out if your PC has a similar arrangement, it might explain why the new PCI card lists com 4 and 5.

I have spoken to seller of sound module who has said it wants a serial port connecting to motherboard com 1, which on device manager shows it is active but nothing plugged in to it. See here http://www.fixya.com/support/p362849-asus_a8n_sli_deluxe_motherboard/manual-10992 and page 30 of motherboard manual.
I shall contact pc shop that installed serial ports on pci card and see if they can do it.
The seller has informed me he has a serial port and connector which he will send me.

Would you like a 'free' MIDI interface?

I've just bought a 8 X 8 emagic unit off that well know auction site. It was a bargain!
As a result I've a spare midiman 2 X 4 interface. I've had two, one on the main PC, the other is a back-up.

The interface uses a serial connection, so should work with your newly installed serial interface.

If your current 'lines of enquiry' fail, I will happily let you have my spare (you'll need to buy a power pack for it).

Hi Paul
Thanks for your offer. Could I leave it on hold as it looks as though the
cable is on it's way which should resolve problem.
Your input is much appreciated

Hi Paul
Managed to get a minute this morning to fit serial connector to motherboard.
It's the first time I've been inside computer but I had downloaded motherboard diagram
which pointed me to the right place.
Everything is working great apart from midi playback occasionally sticking.
I'll look into things a bit more when I get back from holiday, off Sunday morning.
I would just like to say how grateful I am for all your help and advice and offer of midi interface.
Will post in a couple of weeks with update.
All the best
Trevor

Hello Trevor,

Promising that it seems to be working.
Slightly worrying about 'sticky MIDI'.
Enjoy your holiday..

Thanks for the kind words, glad to help.
Cheers,
