I currently own a Fantom G8 which is an absolutely fantastic keyboard !!
I also own an old 76 note Roland D70 which in it's day was another fantastic keyboard !! When I went to play my D70 a few weeks ago I found that the keyboard had stopped working below the middle split(No sound !) The keyboard is absolutely mint condition and I would love to get it working again !
Can anyone tell me if there is any type of support for the D70? Or am I better to just try and find a very good electronics engineer?
Hi there ! I have tried adjusting all parameters including the split point but still the keyboard does not work below what is the default spit point i.e what would be the B below middle C (No sound generated at all )
It does sound if there is a fault with the keys after all. Worth checking with another MIDI source such as your G-8. Can the G-8 play the D-70, does the MIDI stop at the same point if the D-70 plays the G-8 (this would point the finger right at the D-70's keyboard).
If your feeling brave..
Get inside, (with the power lead removed) ensure all connections, especially those around they keyboard, and where ever those leads go to the main circuit board, are nice and tight.
Look for obvious things, is there blacking around the circuitry, corrosion, etc?
Don't think your local TV / video engineer will be able to help, but it's worth asking.
I think it's too specialist. It may need to go to a dedicated synth repair centre, and there will be a large fee involved before they even remove a screw.
Are you UK based, or further a field?
I recently bought a Korg X3 via ebay. It had faults so was cheap. Sadly the faults where beyond my repair as I tracked it down to a fault on the main circuit board. Korg wanted £60 an hour, with a minimum fee of £60 to look at it, and then there was the cost of getting it there.
I managed to pick up another X3. Sure enough when swapping the boards, the other was fine.
Ah I have tried what you suggested with some success !
The sounds will play over midi when I play the D70 from the G8 but
not the other way round ! Which would suggest a problem with the keys on the D70.
My next move is to carefully open the the keyboard and check all connectors and plugs and check for any damage to the actual keys board.
I will let you know how I get on and thanks for your help !
p.s I am based in Fife in Scotland.
I have carefully taken the keyboard to bits and checked all the plugs and board connectors and went over every board visually and can see no sign of damage!!
I have reassembled but still I have the fault !
I would say that it is the board below the keys!
Hey your keyboard is suffering from the exact same failure my d-70 is suffering from.. Not good news. I have figured out what the cause is....it's not an easy fix....I'm still working on a fix for this on my keyboard. Go to this thread on another forum to get the full details. Haven't contacted Roland yet but plan to this week sometime.
