When using the internal sounds as the carrier it is very loud and clear. I've used a few external sources which sound great but not as clear or loud as the internal ones.

My question is how loud can I make the external carrier before it does any damage to the synth?

I imagine that it will start to distort first, I just dont want to risk it.

If you wanted to max out the signal, but ensure the signal doesn't damage your synth, try putting your signal through a limiter, such as the Boss LM-2.
Then, no matter how loud you feed the synth, you can be sure that you won't damage the unit by exceeding the clip value.
