I just checked two things for you:
1. The 5080 doesn't seem to have a usb port.
2. The 2020 does have one, and when you download the driver, it actually contains both the 2020 and 5050 driver! I'm guessing my modified driver will already work for the 2020 without any modification

That's brilliant Alan. I feel better knowing that all XV owners can fully access the hardware they spent good money on. The synth plus the two expansion cards cost me over Aus$3,000 about 7 years ago. It's too much money, too recently, to be left usupported. I'm sure a lot of people will be very greatful for your discovery and ingenuity.

Thanks again,

Napier. grin

A Big Big thank you to Alan for his post. I sent him a Personal message he responded very quickly and sent me a RAR file with the ZIP of his modified code recompiled for x64 running Windows 7.
By recommendation in a further email from Alan all I had to do was click on the roland xv-5050 in my Control Panel - Hardware - View Devices and select update driver from a the location I extracted the ZIP to. Hey Presto! a connection via USB on Win 7.

Although i have not yet uploaded my favourite sequencing software I tested all this by downloading putzlowitsch.de/.../plw-vista-midi-mapper_0_93.zip
from http://bloggingabout.net/blogs/ramon/archive/2009/05/29/windows-7-midi.aspx

This small program will allow you to select the Roland XV-5050 as your prefered midi device.
then downloaded a midi file (bit of a Haydn fan (for obvious reasons) so went to http://www.kunstderfuge.com/haydn.htm

The midi played back great on Bank PE:001 Grand XV patch

thanks again Alan great service.

Excellent, excellent, excellent, EXCELLENT!!! grin grin grin

I've just upgraded from XP Pro 32 bit to 7 Pro 64 bit and spent the last 7 days installing all my software. I left my hardware until last, and last night it was time to install the XV5050 driver. Lo and behold, it didn't work, so I did a Google search which directed me to this forum topic by Mr Wilson. He very kindly sent me his creation which took seconds to install. The unit works fine now. I have the orchestral library installed, and even though I use plugins such as EastWest's Platinum Plus Symphony Orchestra, Garritan and other samples, I also use the XV5050 a lot as it has some really lovely patches (Adagio Strings for instance) on it that work well with a volume slider from my master keyboard. If anybody has seen the 2 part docu/drama on the Discovery Channel called "The Real Family of Jesus", just about all the orchestral strings in that score are from my XV5050. It might be old technology now, but it still has a place in my sonic arsenal.

10/10 Alan! Thanks for your help.

Peace and respect

Kev

Too bad this gambit won't work for Windows XP x64. I have a V-Synth GT. I have reasons for not using Vista or 7. There is no way to make a Vista or 7 driver work in XP.

Korg and Kawai seem to have the time and wherewithal to create XP x64 drivers.

I guess butter doesn't melt in Roland Co.'s mouth.

They make great synthesizers. They just don't care if they disappoint a minority of their customers.

Thank you, very much. Quick response is surprising. Hope springs eternal and all that. Excellent.

I have to wait before I can send the email address. As a new member, I am prevented by the spam filter from sending private messages for an hour.

Much easier to do than expected, the driver programming is very similar to the Win7 inf, which is hopeful for a quick release as I just had to copy the port mappings and device names. I did notice the files are much older from the technology I took it from, lets hope they work with the 5050!

Pm me and I'll send you it, or wait for me to state if they work via me installing xp64!

Thanks for your work Alan! It is excellent!

I don't understand why you have to 'hack' the driver and why Roland doesn't support 64-bit systems...
