Hi all.
I have a TD12 kit.
I practice in a small music room and wanted some powered speakers to plug the kit into.
The cost of a PM3 or PM30 is beyond me at the mo so I looked for an alternative.
I found a Roland DM-2100 set of powered speakers on ebay and called Roland to see if they would be any good.
I was told they would be fine.
I have just tried them.
Problem is that when I play the kick drum, not particularly loud, the sub woofer distorts real bad.
To stop distortion I have to turn it real low making it pointless.
My question is, have I been given the wrong info, ie, they are no good for electronic drums, or, does it mean the sub is bust??
Cheers.

Sorry to hear of your problem.
To be honest I think it might be a bit of both..

When I Googled / searched to find out what the DM-2100 was I was some what surprised to discover what it was. This seems to be a monitoring set-up more suitable for recording. That said, if your room is small, then it shouldn't really be that much of an issue. think it would be different if you were trying to use it for rehearsal / live use.

If it really is sounding distorted at relativity low volumes, then perhaps the sub's driver (speaker) is damaged, and possibly the reason it ended up on ebroke.
Might be worth trying some other sound source (CD player, or synth) to see if the sub is functioning correctly.

Here is a question I often ask..
Where are you based?

Hi S-E-A.
Thanks for the reply.
I shall give your suggestion a go.
Would I be able to tell if the sub is broken visually or would it be a electronic device inside the speaker that has gone?
If it is the sub I haven't given positive feed back yet so funds are still held in pay pal.
I don't want to get my facts wrong though as the person has 100% feedback and I would hate to ruin that for no reason.
I am located in the West Midlands near the city of Lichfield.

Hello..

Sometimes it's as simple as a tear in the speaker, or the it's separated from the edge.
Sometimes it might be damage within the voice coil, moving the speaker back and forth by hand, results in dry scraping sound.

See what it sounds like when tested with another source first.
It may just be the TD-12 is clipping the input stage, hence the distortion, but I doubt it, as it goes when you turn down the level.

As to what then, I would contact the seller with your issues, (but I wouldn't mention you tried an e kit through it). The seller might be reasonable and offer a refund.
If you feel you've been 'had' and you can contact ebay / paypal. I think you'll find goods are released when funds have been paid, so those funds are no longer held by paypal.

I'm a little over 2 hrs away, so checking it out myself might be a little tricky.

I was trying it with a cd player just now.
I unplugged the two speakers from the sub to listen to the sub alone and it just crackles and pops, no clarity at all.
Looks like it's knackered!!
As for the seller, I asked them if it would be ok for what I wanted it for and they said it would sound really good.
Probably would if it worked!!
As for paypal, the money is paid to paypal, that gives the seller the go ahead to send the goods then the funds are held until the buyer gives positive feed back or a certain amount of days go by, then the seller can withdraw the money from their paypal account.

Two hours away! Where abouts are you then S-E-A?

Doesn't one of the speakers act as a control for the system?

Cracks, and pops - sounds very driver related.
Sounds as if you have a tough decision to make, at the very least contacting the seller explaining the problem.

I reside in the middle of nowhere just out side of Peterborough.

Yes it does but there is a seperate wire that connects the sub to the control speaker.
I have sent the seller a message stating the problem.
I shall see what reply I get.
Should have bought a PM3!!
