TD-8 Low Volume

Hi,

I'm new to v-drums and picked up this kit off a friend who hasn't got time to use it. I have a TD-8 brain, PD-7 high hat, 2x cy-12 crash/ride, 4x pd-80 (3x tom, 1x snare) and 1x kd-8.

I've got it all hooked up and have been playing with it for a day. Firstly, every time I turn it on it says;

BACKUP NG!
EXECUTE FACTORY
RESET ALL ...

And then says battery backup is low. I get past that, and have been adjusting the master volume of everything to 127, making sure output on all is set to MAS and yet everything is extremely quiet. The strange thing is if I press preview on any of them it is at least double the volume so it's not the volume out of the headphones.

Could anyone give any advice? Apologes if any of the model numbers are wrong, this is my first v-drum kit.

Thanks

well Tom aka 'biguana' was using a TD-8, perhaps he might have some ideas..

From what I can gather using your information, nice and clear, and not in text speak, a bonus..
It appears to be 'defaulting' to settings, due to the low battery.
The settings for the pads may not be the ones you are currently using.

I don't know how easy it is to replace it's battery, but I strongly recommend changing it.
It may well be fairly straight forward, and Roland tend to use CR2032 3V lithium cells.
They are reasonable easily removed as they also use holders, not soldered direct to the PCB.

Once the battery is replaced, you should then be able to 'tweak' the TD-8's settings to get the response you want.

Don't suppose your local?

Hi,

Thanks for your response. I live in South London, Putney ... so not sure if any dealers are around that way? I've Googled but search strings all bring up local stockists of Roland products so I've emailed Roland about the battery as the manual says contact them or a local dealer and I'm currently waiting for a response.

Are you sure that the battery would solve these problems? I thought the battery was just designed to save your stored data, settings etc when the unit was disconnected from mains power. When I power it up, I can get into all of the settings and tweak volumes for each module independently, I ramp them all up to 127 which makes a minor difference but still extremely low volume ... I've even got the headphone and master volume control maxed and it's still not great.

Thanks

Hello.

Ah!.. Putney, always think of the EMS 3 synth when I hear the name Putney.

Is the module remembering any of the changes you are making?
It should do if the battery is doing it's job.

The fact you mentioned when you press the 'preview' button, the sound is much louder would indicate it's not a problem with the actual volume control, or headphone output.

I'll do some digging in the TD08's manual. It might be useful to know if the pad types match what you have
within the TD-8.

Nope the module isn't remembering the changes (backup battery is dead) but I'm quickly learning the menus as I'm having to put in the volume adjustments every time I turn it on!

The pad model numbers / 'types' are correctly found in the TD-8, so each module is reporting is correct model number inside the TD8, i.e. channel 1 is kd-8 for instance.

I'm doing some reading through the TD8 manual PDF and searching for 'volume', 'low volume' etc doesn't bring up anything useful ... this is strange. I've found some other forums with someone who reported the same issue but no one was able to fix it, I also followed the instructions they suggested;

Wasn't able to go that forum earlier, but seems to be working now.

Does the TD-8 have any indication of the the level of signal coming from the various pads?
I'm sure it's a set-up / sensitivity issue.

The preview button may well be set to give max note volume (127), hence the level difference.
Other than that, I'm running out of ideas.

According to Google maps I'm around 2 hrs away. So it's not impossible to visit, I might even be able to swap the battery.. Do you fall in a congestion zone?

Hi,

Not sure I can help (I'm not a TD-8 owner any more since I got my TD-10) but thanks for thinking of me!

How are the sensitivity settings in setup>trig?

All the kicks on my td-10 now are inexplicably massively quieter than everything else even since I did a factory reset and I solve that by just setting the sensitivity much higher on the kick.

It definitely sounds like you should replace the battery, then see if it's still a problem after that.

Cheers,
Tom

Thanks for your responses everyone,

I've got myself a battery to replace the on board one, I've got a background with electronics so shouldn't be a problem replacing it. I'll do that, try the trigger sensitivity (thanks Tom) and I'll repost with results. Unfortunately I won't be able to try this until the weekend at the earliest but will post when I've tried this.

Thanks again everyone for your help, much appreciated.
