GR-20 problem with hum

Hi all,
I am loving my GR-20 (purchased on ebay) .. especially when I rip some great piano or organ solos for my band mates .. however .. I am having some trouble with excessive noise/hum coming from the unit. When the synth outputs are connected to a PA mixer and the Guitar Output is connected to a Guitar Amp (I am assuming this is the correct setup to use) .. I am getting very significant hum from both the amp and the PA.

Am I doing something wrong? is there a known fix for this .. or did I get a defective unit?

I am sending signal from L (Output) for the Synth and Guitar Output to the amp.

Thanks for any advice.

Hello & welcome.

Classic ground loop issue.
Solution...

Get yourself a DI box, most (if not all) have a ground lift switch.
They come in passive (no electronics as such, just an audio isolation transformer),
and active (contains electronic circuitry), and these need power to make them function (either from a battery, or powered via the mixers phantom power system).
Most DI boxes will have a form of signal reduction, sometimes know as pad switches. These can attenuate the signal if required to prevent distortion.

The jack output of the GR-20 goes to the jack input of the DI box. This will have an XLR output, this goes to the a mic channel of your PA mixer.

Hopefully it's as simple a fix as that.
If that doesn't resolve it, we will try plan B.

Hey Sonic,

On the same subject (which kind of), i'm battling to find the right way to hook up my GT10 & GR20.
Your help would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks.

I'll try and help if I can, but I'm not a plank thumper (guitarist).

I know the GT-10 is a guitar processor..
I know the GR-20 is a guitar synth unit..

Is the GT-10 just to process the live guitar part, or do you want it to process the sound of the GR-20 as well?

Hey sonic. Yup, the GT 10 is to control just the guitar sound. My problem is that currently i have to run the guitar out to the GK3 divided pickup input, then the GK3 into the GR20 and out to amp. However, because i'm such an idiot when it comes to technology that i haven't figured out how to run the magnetic signal to the GT10 and the midi signal to the GR20 and both out to individual amps.
Help!!

I have the GT-10B and the GR-20 both mounted on a pedal board and interconnected like this..
Bass GK to GR-20 13 pin input.
GR-20 guitar out to GT-10B Input.
GR-20 L/Mono output to GT-10B S/R loop Return.
GT-10B L/R outputs to P.A.

GR-20 midi out to GT-10B midi in
GR-20 midi in to GT-10B midi out

I then use the GT-10B dual channel (channel B) with the S/R loop placed at the start of the B channel on all patches, with the S/R loop effect enabled. I then can use any unused effects which are not being used by the bass signal on channel A, into channel B to apply effect to the synth sounds if required.
I also make use of the Assigns to control a mix between the bass signal and the synth signal, using the EXP pedal or the CTL pedals to do various functions.

With the GR-20 and GT-10B midi'ed together, they both track with the same patch changes, so if you turn the dial on the GT-10B, the GR-20 will follow patch changes. Same with the GK S1 & S2 buttons, the GR-20 and GT-10B will change patch from these buttons.

The same theory will apply to the GR-20 and GT-10 combination.
My gear is currently on auction, as i am investing in the new GR-55 instead. This one unit will do for me the same as the GT-10 & GR-20 but in 1/3rd smaller footprint.

Over on the V-Guitar forums is a 'group buy deal' going on, a really cheep price which cannot be disclosed publicly.
But if you join up and message a request for a pricing PM, you will get a link to the supplier, whom i have got them to send me one via FedEx(prepay duty/taxes) to New Zealand.

Also with the GT-10 and GR-20 hookup, turn off the 'EXP pedal Midi Out' of both units to prevent unwanted EXP pedal pedal controlling between them.
