Always used the digital out up til now, and that doesnt introduce hum.

Changed to RCA outs and background hum has appeared.

Any ideas? (other than the obvious"go back to digital" grin

Sounds like an earth loop issue..

What is it plugged into?
Strange thing is, this is powered by a 'wall wart' / 'brick-on-a-lead' mains adapter. The 880 isn't powered directly by mains, so you should really be having an earth issue.
Is the mains adapter the real Roland one that came with the machine?
Is the headphone signal hum free?

The connecting signal cables.. are they away from any mains leads?

Thanks for your suggestions.I think I've found a way around it.

It would appear that as soon as I enable the usb port on the DR880 for midi, the hum occurs. Even when usb is not plugged into anything.

Have changed the usb back to "storage" and using dedicated midi in/out, and there is no hum.

So I've got around the problem, but it would seem that the USB midi area does cause a hum.

Glad you found a solution..
Wouldn't happen to have plugged it in to a USB port on a laptop by chance?

No plugged it into the USB in on a stand alone PC.

However the background hum strats as soon as I enable the port on the DR880 and plug the usb lead into it, without it being connected at the computer end.

I would contact Roland about this.
I could understand it if it was connected to the computer, but to get hum just plugging the USB in is very strange...

The old ol' MIDI connection is always still available... remember the connection is optically isolated.
