Hi I'm new to this forum.
Can anyone help me with a problem concerning my XP-50.
I have 2 expansion boards installed 1 techno and 1 Drum and Bass.
When I select a patch from either if these cards the patch name displays properly and the sound plays correctly for a few seconds then distorts. The patch name then displays as random characters. When I scroll through the patch list they are all distorted and the names as above. I have the keyboard disconnected from my midi network and computer so the problem seems to be with the keyboard itself. I've also tried installing the two cards in the other slots and the same problem arises.

The main pre installed patches etc in the XP-50 all work fine.

Thanks in advance for any assistance on this.

Is this a new problem?
Have the boards been working fine, but now mess up?

Defiantly sounds like poorly XP-50 either way.
The good ol' factory reset is always a good place to start, back-up your settings if there's any valuable data within it first!!

Initializing the XP-50 - Restoring the Factory Settings
You may wish to reinitialize the XP-50 to restore the factory settings. Use the following procedure to reinitialize the XP-50:
1) Press DISK/UTILITY.
2) Press #4 on the 10-key pad to select “SOUND.”
3) Press #5 on the 10-key pad to select “PRESET.”
4) Press ENTER, then use the VALUE DIAL to select “Memory Protect OFF.”
5) Press ENTER twice. The screen will display “COMPLETE” followed by “USER: 001 West Coast.”

I have a nasty feeling it's something a little more serious..
Might be a fault on the main baord, perhaps?
I recently had a similar issue with a Korg Wavestation AD, random patch names and distortion, but only using patches stored on the data & PCM cards.
I found that the 'gold' contacts needed cleaning, once I cleaned them up, and placed them in / out a few times, all was well again.
You've tried different slots, a good idea, but no success.

Perhaps it's time to think about looking for a JV-1080?
It might need a trip to a specialist repair centre.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll try the reset this evening. Gonna clean the connections also.
I'll post a reply to let you know how I got on.

I have tried resetting the machine. Also I installed a new backup battery. All to no avail. Any idea what else might be wrong with the machine. I want to assess whether its is worth repairing or investing in JV-2080. Any help here would be appreciated.

Other than saying the obvious.. it's broken?
I asked before if the boards where working ok, and this fault just developed.

Really don't know to be honest.
Does it work okay without the expansion boards?
If it's does, then at least it you can still use the keyboard, the sequencer, and have some patches to play with.
The expansion boards could then possibly live happily in a 2080, or a 1080 if the 2080 is out of your price range.

I wouldn't completely give up on the XP-50..
It might be worth asking for quotes at repair centres, and asking Roland if they know what has happened..

I like the XP-30, although of course, it doesn't have the sequencer on board.
