EG-101 control from Midi Keyboard

I have just bought an EG-101 for the princely sum of £15 from eBay.

I want the cheesy house sounds from it and to be able to at least control the sound selection from my ReMote keyboard.

In a similar setup with my Juno 106 it cycles through the sound using the MIDI Prog Change function on the Novation ReMote.

I have set it up so it receives MIDI from the ReMote but I can change the sounds. It may be relevant that a lot of the buttons on the EG-101 need a solid press to function even after applying some switch cleaner to the switches on the PCB. The unit came from a guy who clearly was a heavy smoker!

BTW if anyone has a set of non-nicotine stained keys for this I would be interested!

That's one hella of a bargain your grabbed yourself.

Spraying switch cleaner around is not always the best thing.
Unless you can actually get it into the contacts it can sometimes do more harm than good.
I think replacing the switches might be the easier option, failing that, swap the ones you need to work for the ones less used functions.

As to the nicotine stained keys, I thought the retro / vintage / used look was in.

Just bought replacements from Roland at 45p each!

Yes but the smell of stale fag grime is not pleasant! I've heard tales that Lemon Juice and Vinegar can be quite good, but they may be old wives ones.

That was indeed a bargain!

I bought an EG-101 before Christmas and have noted that one of the keys "lower A" has been repaired. As a consequence, every time a key is pressed a sound doesn't always emit.

Any advice on how I could sort it, even to play every time without replacing the key?

Cracking wee synth it is, some of the patches are straight lifts from my old SH-101.

Cheers.

This is normally the same with most synths, just replace the rubber contact strip on top of the pcb under the keys. To test swap the left and right ones over to see if the "working" strip makes a difference. If there is no difference you may see an obvious reason if the contact pcb is faulty. On mine is was Coca Cola residue! Both are available quite cheaply from Roland.

Have you had any joy controlling the patches from a Midi keyboard? I can't seem to get mine to respond. I can play midi notes but cant scroll through the patches.

Thanks for the speedy replies, Guys.

As far as the MIDI question is concerned, I'm afraid I can't assist at this stage as I'm still navigating the manual and keyboard itself but very impressed with what it's capable of. I'll be hooking this up through my Yamaha DJ-X bought many years ago when I couldn't afford the EG.

What are you using as a controller for the EG-101?
